As part of its welding process training program, Graycor recently held its fourth workshop, partnering with leading arc welding manufacturer Lincoln Electric as well as vendors Acuren Inspection Inc. and Superheat FGH. The two-day event was held in February at Lincoln’s welding training facility in Bolingbrook, Illinois.

Graycor’s Brian Boseo, director of quality, and Lori Kuiper, welding engineer, led the workshop which included presentation lectures and hands-on demonstrations for more than 25 Graycor Industrial superintendents, estimators, project managers and engineers who attended.

“The advanced process program is designed to give our job site team members a better working knowledge and understanding of the best practices, regulations and challenges impacting welding work today,” says Lori. “There is something for everyone in this class: team members with years of experience will learn about the latest advancements in equipment and consumables, while others may be welding for the first time,” she adds.

Representatives from Acuren—a provider of asset protection solutions used to evaluate the structural integrity of industrial infrastructures—presented to the group about non-destructive testing techniques. Attendees learned about advancements in heat treatment, thanks to industry leader Superheat FGH, a provider of heat treatment services. Demonstrations focused on proper wrapping techniques and thermal couple (TC) placement.

Other topics covered in the workshop included hex chrome, welding setup, procedures, qualifications and defects, as well as codes of construction, contract requirements and reducing welding costs.

In addition, under the tutorship of Lincoln Electric representatives, attendees took turns welding using various techniques and processes.

To date, a total of 80 Graycor employees have attended the workshops, which began in October 2014 and are scheduled bi-annually.
